There’s a new video with leaked footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 floating around online, and while it’s not the most exciting clip, the story behind it is a fascinating window into how glimpses of the highly-anticipated blockbuster have breached containment over the past few years.
On March 1, a newly created Instagram account posted a short video that appears to show in-development footage of Grand Theft Auto 6, the next main entry in Rockstar’s long-running, uber-popular open-world crime-simulator franchise. In the footage, we see what looks like a small bridge in Vice City that is over some water. A truck, which appears to be a GTA V asset, drives over the bridge. And that’s about it. Here’s the clip:
The supposed GTA 6 leak was quickly spotted by GTA fans on Reddit and shared there as well as on TikTok and other parts of the web. While some called it fake, many others believe it is real and not part of the infamous 2022 leak that dumped a ton of videos of the in-development GTA 6 onto the web, much to the frustration of Rockstar Games. I’ve seen those leaks, and from what I can tell, this is new. Not exciting, mind you, but new.
An old GTA 6 leak four years in the making
What is far more interesting is how this supposedly leaked footage made its way to Instagram. The burner account that posted it, Vice City Alligator, claims they found it while cleaing out their phone.
“Finally clearing out my phone and found this,” posted the account on Instagram. “Footage is from over 4 years ago, recorded straight from a dev’s setup during lockdown.”
The poster claims to have known a bloke who worked at Rockstar, and when he was working from home back in 2022, the dev apparently sent the Insta user this clip after being asked to show something the dev was proud of. I guess he was proud of this bridge. I get it. It’s a nice-looking bit of elevated roadway.
“Been sat on it for ages, but since they don’t work there anymore, figured I’d drop it,” explained Vice City Alligator. “[To be honest,] it literally shows nothing, just asked them to show me a spot they were proud of working on. Quality is absolute shite though cuz they sent it via email (had to compress it). Never thought I’d actually post it cuz its a nothingburger.”
And before you go jumping to DM the person for more information, the user said they will never log into this account again and have no plans to reply to DMs. I reached out to the account as well as Rockstar and will update this post if I hear back.
