Marathon Is Already Trailing Behind Arc Raiders, Says Analyst

Marathon’s beta is over, and it seems to be selling well, but not nearly as well as Arc Raiders on Steam. An Eevee Lego set was turned into a whole different Pokémon by a crafty fan. Resident Evil Requiem is doing great. And Atomic Heart (remember that game?) is getting its fourth and final DLC soon. Are you excited about that? I sort of forgot Atomic Heart ever came out!

It’s the latest edition of Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku‘s daily roundup of gaming news, rumors, and culture. I’m sitting here reading this excellent deep dive into what Steven Spielberg’s upcoming alien movie might actually be about. Perhaps it’s a sequel to 2002’s Taken, a miniseries nobody remembers that Spielberg worked on? I’m just excited ol’ Stevie is making another big sci-fi movie! Anyway, enjoy today’s Checkpoint while I enjoy some high-quality product.

Marathon has already sold around 250k copies on Steam, but…

Marathon’s open beta did really well during Steam’s big Next Fest last week. According to a new analytical report from Alinea Insight, Marathon was the second most-wishlisted game during Next Fest, with over 200,000 players adding it to their own wishlists. It now sits at around 1.2 million total wishlists on Steam. I’d assume Bungie is pretty happy about that. The open beta was also the most-played Next Fest demo.

The stat Bungie and Sony might be less happy about is that, as of March 2, three days before launch, Alinea Insight estimates Marathon had sold just under 250,000 copies on Steam. Three days before Arc Raiders had launched, it had sold around 550,000 copies, more than double Marathon. That doesn’t mean Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter is going to flop, but it likely means it will struggle to compete with Arc Raiders at launch.

Interestingly, that might not be a problem, as only 48 percent of Steam players who checked out the Marathon open beta also played Arc Raiders. Meanwhile, 74 percent of Marathon open beta players on Steam also played Destiny 2. Bungie’s audience is dedicated, but will they push through the early hours of suffering and become Marathon fans? We’ll find out soon, as the game launches on March 5 on PC, Xbox, and PS5.

Capcom says Resident Evil Requiem has shipped 5 million units

The recently released Resident Evil Requiem is very good. So it’s not shocking to see Capcom announce on Wednesday that the latest entry in the survival horror series has already sold over 5 million copies. It has a way to go before it beats out the best-selling Resident Evil game of all time, the also-great Resident Evil 2 remake from 2019. That game has sold nearly 17 million copies over the last seven years. Wowza!

Someone turned an Eevee Lego set into a Bidoof

Bidoof, a bevear-like Pokémon who doesn’t give a fuck, is a fan-favorite among online players. But Bidoof doesn’t get as much love as many other Pokémon, like Pikachu or Eevee. So one Lego lover took it upon themselves to fix this situation, turning a recently released Eevee Lego set into a Bidoof.

“I wanted to make my favorite Pokémon from the new Eevee set,” said Instagram user Creationcaravan4. “No extra pieces needed. Instructions coming soon to Rebrickable.”
