Trump says U.S. destroyed 16 Iranian vessels over mine fears, but the real warning about the Strait of Hormuz is chilling

The U.S. military destroyed 16 Iranian mine-laying naval vessels on Tuesday amid fears that Tehran was preparing to deploy mines in the Strait of Hormuz. As reported by Axios, the strike targeted inactive ships believed to be connected to potential mining operations in the critical waterway.

A senior U.S. official told the outlet the action was taken based on intelligence indicating Iran was preparing to begin laying mines. The operation was described as a preemptive move aimed at preventing a disruption to one of the most important shipping corridors in the world.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments, making any threat to the passage a major concern for international markets and commercial shipping. Mines placed in the narrow waterway could block tankers and other vessels, potentially halting large portions of the global energy supply.

President Donald Trump addressed the situation on Truth Social, warning Iran that placing mines in the Strait would trigger severe military retaliation. He wrote that the United States would use the same technology and missile capabilities previously used against drug traffickers to destroy any vessel attempting to mine the passage.

“They will be dealt with quickly and violently,” Trump wrote, adding that Iran would face military consequences “never seen before” if mines were deployed in the strait. He also said the United States had not confirmed that mines were already placed in the waterway, amid Kurdish offensive backing inside Iran.

Trump suggested the situation could still de-escalate if any mines that may have been deployed were removed. “If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Trump initially said 10 Iranian vessels had been destroyed in the strike and indicated additional actions could follow. U.S. Central Command later clarified on X that 16 vessels connected to the suspected mine-laying effort had been eliminated, as Hegseth’s warning to Iranians added to the broader messaging around the crisis.
