Joe Rogan blasts Democrats over voter ID debate, saying the comparison to Jim Crow is “horses—”

Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized Democrats over their opposition to voter ID laws, arguing that comparing the requirement to Jim Crow era restrictions is absurd. The debate surfaced during a conversation with journalist Michael Shellenberger on Rogan’s podcast, where the pair discussed the broader political argument surrounding voter identification requirements.
The exchange gained attention after being reported by Fox News, which highlighted Rogan’s blunt dismissal of the comparison between modern voter ID laws and historic voter suppression policies. Rogan said he cannot understand why some progressives still frame the issue through the lens of Jim Crow.
The topic also resurfaced memories of comments made in 2021 by Vice President Kamala Harris, who raised concerns that some rural voters might have difficulty accessing a copier or places like Kinko’s to scan identification documents. Rogan referenced those remarks while arguing that the broader criticism of voter ID laws does not align with everyday realities.
Rogan argues voter ID debate ignores basic practicality
During the discussion, Rogan told Shellenberger that requiring identification to vote seems like common sense. He said the idea that an ID requirement represents a barrier to voting is difficult for him to understand.
Rogan pointed to policies during the COVID 19 pandemic, when people were often required to present vaccination cards to enter certain venues or participate in activities. He said it is contradictory to demand proof of vaccination for routine activities while arguing that identification should not be required to vote, amid debate over Trump’s voting law.
Shellenberger explained that many progressives he speaks with frame the issue around the history of discriminatory voting practices. He said their argument often centers on the belief that any new voting requirement could create barriers similar to those imposed during the Jim Crow era.
Rogan rejected that framing, saying an ID requirement is simply a way to confirm a voter’s identity and citizenship. “ID is not a barrier. It’s just insurance that you’re a citizen while you’re voting,” Rogan said during the conversation.
The discussion also turned to claims about voter fraud. Shellenberger noted that some progressives argue there is very little fraud in U.S. elections, though he clarified he was describing their position rather than endorsing it.
When Rogan asked who actually believes that argument, Shellenberger said many progressives do. Rogan responded bluntly, calling the idea “horses—.”
Shellenberger said he believes many people genuinely hold that view, but Rogan suggested the stance may stem from groupthink. He argued that if individuals were asked privately, many would likely agree that requiring identification to vote is reasonable, as political figures weigh a Stephen A. Smith run.
Rogan concluded that most citizens already possess some form of identification or can obtain one without difficulty. He said asking voters to prove who they are before casting a ballot is a practical safeguard when participating in a presidential election.
