Police in Austin are searching for a group of armed suspects connected to a string of vehicle burglaries and auto thefts in Northwest Austin. Investigators say the incidents involve suspects openly carrying firearms while breaking into or stealing vehicles from residential driveways.
The crimes were detailed in a report from Yahoo News. The report highlighted surveillance footage showing multiple suspects approaching homes while armed.
Authorities say the suspects appear to be working together during the burglaries. Some individuals act as lookouts while others target the vehicles.
Police say armed suspects are providing cover during thefts
According to the Austin Police Department, several incidents have been reported in which suspects burglarized or stole vehicles while visibly carrying firearms. Detectives believe the suspects’ use of weapons is intended to intimidate anyone who might confront them.
Surveillance footage from one of the incidents shows a group approaching a home where several vehicles were parked in the driveway. Two suspects can be seen holding firearms while others move toward the vehicles, with attention also falling on new security cameras in town.
Investigators believe those individuals are acting as armed cover while the rest of the group carries out the burglaries. The tactic suggests the suspects are prepared to threaten violence if someone intervenes.
The footage has raised concerns among residents as police continue investigating the crimes. Officials say the suspects should be considered dangerous due to the presence of firearms during the burglaries.
Instead, authorities say anyone who sees suspicious activity or witnesses a crime in progress should immediately call 9 1 1. Officers stress that confronting the suspects could place residents at serious risk.
Detectives are asking the public to help identify the individuals seen in the surveillance footage. Anyone who recognizes the suspects or has information about the incidents is encouraged to contact the Austin Police Department.
