If you want to gather fish in Hytale, you’ll obviously need to learn how to fish for them!
Uniquely, fishing in Hytale isn’t very “traditional”. As in, you don’t just get a rod and cast out to sea to wait for a bite. Instead, you’ll need to set traps and wait for the fish to come to you.
In this quick guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to fish in the Early Access launch version of Hytale.
How Fishing in Hytale Works

To start fishing, you’ll first need to use your Workbench to craft a Farmer’s Workbench. Then you’ll need to upgrade that Farmer’s Workbench to Tier 2.
Doing so will unlock the crafting recipe for the Fishing Trap, which requires the following materials:
- Any Wood x10 – Obtained from chopping down any trees.
- Essence of Life x50 – Obtained from harvesting crops, including ones found in the wild.
- Plant Fiber x20 – Mostly obtained from cutting tall grass.
- Iron Ingot x1 – Obtained by smelting Iron Ore at a Furnace. Check out our guide on all ore locations for help getting Iron Ore.

In addition, you can also craft various types of Fish Bait at the Farmer’s Workbench. These are not at all required, but they do make fishing more efficient!
Once you have at least one Fishing Trap, you’ll need to go find a large natural body of water, such as a river or sea. Then use the Fishing Trap like any tool in the game to place it on the water’s surface.
If you have any bait, you can also use it at this point. Simply equip it from your hotbar and click on an empty Fishing Trap to add it in.
After that, you just really need to wait it out! Just go do anything else while you wait, then return to check on your Fishing Traps. You then just need to click on them to collect the fish they caught, if any. It’s as simple as that!
Worth noting: traps aren’t removed once you collect the fish. So, you don’t need to keep making new ones.
That’s all there is to know about how to fish in Hytale as of the Early Access launch. Sadly, there isn’t a more “traditional” fishing method, but now you know how to fish!
