Hytale might still be in early access but there is still a lot you can do and uncover. This includes a vast number of animals that are currently in the game – although they may be wild. While exploring, you can also come across all sorts of horses.
I’ve come across horses as well and have the best possible way to technically ‘tame’ them. In this guide, I’ll go over the way – including how you can keep foals as well. With that said, let’s capture some wild horses!
How to Tame Horses
Hytale is currently in early access, so there is no official way of taming horses. However, you can still capture and keep them, although they are still technically ‘wild’. I’ll also show you how you can keep foals.

How To Keep Horses
To get a horse in Hytale, you just need to start by finding one. You can find horses just by roaming the wilds and you’ll eventually find one. I was able to find one just after exploring for 5 minutes.
After that, simply approach the horse and press F to mount it. This will allow you to ride it freely.
Some important things to keep in mind:
- Don’t mount from the back – the horse will most likely kick you
- You can equip a carrot to make the horse less skittish but for some reason you can’t mount them until you spook them again.
After that, you can just lead the horse to an enclosure and keep them inside. This ensures that you always have a horse to ride whenever you want.
But the horse is still wild – even in the enclosure. So, approach it like one or it will kick you!
How To Capture Foals (Baby Horses)
In the wild, you can also come across foals and you can’t ride these. However, you can actually capture foals.
To do this, you will need to craft a Capture Crate. The recipe for it unlocks at the Farmer’s Workbench once you’ve built and placed it.
The Capture Crate requires the following materials:
- Any Wood x4 – Obtained by chopping down any type of tree.
- Essence of Life x50 – Mainly obtained through harvesting crops, including the ones found randomly in the wild.
After that, you just need to approach the foal with the Capture Crate and click on it to capture it. You can then place the foal inside an enclosure as well.
For now, the foals don’t really grow up into horses, so more than likely this will be added later on.

While technically the feature is missing, you can still easily keep horses allowing you to mount and travel with them whenever you want from your base. Hopefully, they do add more advanced features when it comes to animals so that you can actually manage them properly!
