After months of legal turmoil and a sudden court decision, NBA star Patrick Beverley has an explanation of the alleged assault that everyone got wrong

NBA veteran Patrick Beverley is finally speaking up about the family incident that led to his felony assault arrest last year. The guard recently shared his side of the story after a grand jury declined to indict him, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to move forward with charges.

Beverley addressed the situation in a video posted to his YouTube channel, where he walked viewers through what he says really happened at his mother’s Texas home in November 2025. According to Complex, early coverage of the arrest was largely based on police documents and the initial reports that circulated after the incident.

According to Beverley, the situation started around 3:00am when his mother called him and urgently asked him to come over. When he arrived, she explained that his teenage sister had left the house again. Beverley said the issue had already caused problems before and had even brought Child Protective Services into the situation during a previous incident.

Once inside the house, Beverley said he tried to confront his sister about what was going on. He explained that he pulled her by the arm into their mother’s room so they could talk about why she had been sneaking out to see her boyfriend.

Beverley also said he never planned to press charges against the boyfriend. In his words, he didn’t want to “mess up his life.” The moment things escalated, according to Beverley, came when his sister suddenly ran after the boyfriend as he was leaving the room.

At that point, Beverley said he grabbed the front of her hoodie and asked, “Where are you going?” Not long after that moment, police arrived at the house. Beverley later realized that the boyfriend had apparently contacted authorities during the situation.

As officers spoke with his sister outside the home, Beverley recalled his mother overhearing the conversation and realizing that the version of events being shared didn’t match what had actually happened inside the house.

“And then my sister runs to the truck, like, ‘No, that didn’t happen. What are you guys doing?’” Beverley recalled in the video. Despite the confusion, Beverley said he tried to calm everyone down while officers handled the situation. At the time, he didn’t even realize he was about to be detained and taken into custody.

Beverley acknowledged that the public narrative about the incident largely came from the police report. From his perspective, that report only showed one side of the story. “I just understand that the narrative people are going off is based on the police report. I get it. I’d probably look at it the same way too, but that’s not at all what happened. Everybody got family issues,” he said.

Looking back now, Beverley described the experience as depressing, sad, and embarrassing for his family. Family disputes involving athletes can sometimes spiral into major headlines, something fans have seen before when a former NBA player was arrested after an alleged assault incident that reportedly happened in front of a child.

With the legal situation now behind him, Beverley has moved forward with his basketball career overseas. The longtime NBA guard is currently playing professionally in Greece while continuing to share his perspective on what he believes really happened that night.
