Hold onto your hats, Chick-fil-A fans, because the fast-food giant has finally listened to its customers and brought back the original, much-loved version of its famous waffle fries. The company quietly reversed a controversial change, confirming that the pea starch ingredient that caused so much uproar is now gone from the recipe.
According to Newsweek, the update started spreading online after eagle-eyed customers noticed that Chick-fil-A’s website now confirms the fries no longer contain pea starch. This ingredient had been added during a recipe tweak in 2024, and it didn’t go over well. Fry fanatics quickly took to the internet, sharing reactions that ranged from pure relief to renewed criticism of all the extra ingredients in fast food these days that can affect people’s health.
The original adjustment, which was introduced late last year, added pea starch to the fries’ coating. The idea was to help them maintain crispiness, but many diners complained that this ingredient totally altered the taste of their beloved waffle fries.
This is why you don’t mess with perfection
Now, Chick-fil-A’s support page states the recipe no longer includes it, which clearly signals the chain has returned to its previous, cherished formula. A representative for Chick-fil-A even confirmed the change publicly, saying the ingredient has been removed from the supply chain.
This reversal comes after months of intense online discussion about the fries’ texture and flavor. Some customers said the added coating made the fries harder and just less enjoyable, which is a real bummer when you’re craving that perfect waffle fry experience. Others even raised concerns about potential dietary or allergy issues linked to pea-based ingredients.
Pea starch is a common additive used in processed foods to enhance texture. However, allergy organizations point out that peas belong to the broader legume family, which also includes other common allergens like peanuts, soy, chickpeas, lentils, beans, and lupin.
Allergy UK, for example, explains that allergic reactions to pea ingredients can occur and sometimes overlap with sensitivities to other legumes, potentially leading to medical emergencies. While Chick-fil-A’s fries were never listed among the major allergens, the ingredient change did prompt some customers to wonder if it might limit who could safely enjoy the product.
The news of the reversal has sparked lively discussions across social media. Users are debating whether the fries truly taste the same as they once did, with many commenters saying they had already noticed the difference. The reactions also spread like wildfire on TikTok, where users enthusiastically shared their thoughts on the fast-food chain’s decision.
One TikTok user questioned the whole idea of adding extra ingredients, writing, “Why can’t it be potatoes, salt and oil for the frying? Why does it have to have all of these chemicals added?” Another commenter used the moment to call for even more menu changes, posting, “They need to change the chicken back to how it was too…”
Chick-fil-A’s waffle fries have always been, and continue to be, one of the chain’s most popular menu items. According to the company’s menu information, the fries are made from waffle-cut potatoes cooked in canola oil until they’re perfectly crisp on the outside and wonderfully tender inside, then sprinkled with sea salt.
