As a survival crafting game based on the ever-popular Minecraft, Hytale obviously features a farming system.
You can plant and grow crops, which you can use to make food or craft certain items. The system has some quirks, such as its use of the currency-like Essence of Life, but it’s a fairly standard farming system overall.
In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to get started with farming!
How to Start Farming
The very first thing you’ll need to start your farming adventure is to craft and place a Farmer’s Workbench. You can make it at any regular Workbench by using the following materials:
- Any Tree Trunk x6 – Obtained by cutting down any type of tree.
- Plant Fiber x20 – Primarily obtained from cutting tall grass found in the wild.
The basic Farmer’s Workbench will be the heart of your farm, essentially giving you all of the tools you need.
However, the Farmer’s Workbench does have a fairly limited selection from the start! You’ll need to upgrade it with various materials to unlock more tools and even Seeds. For help with that, check out our Workbench upgrading guide.
For starting out, though, you should craft the Crude Hoe, Empty Watering Can, and Crude Shears. These are the basic farming tools you’ll need!
Most important here are the Shears. Once you have them, look for mature crops that can spawn randomly as you explore. Things such as Mature Pumpkins or Mature Wheat, for example.
Once you manage to spot one of those mature crops, use the Shears to harvest them. This can randomly reward you with a seed of the same crop you harvested, which you can use back at your farm.
Plus, you’ll get Essences of Life on top! Those are an important resource that sort of acts as a “currency”, allowing you to trade them for Seeds and Saplings at the Farmer’s Workbench.
I’m not going to lie to you here, the early farming can be pretty rough. It’s very reliant on exploration and luck, as you need to find wild crops to harvest for resources before your farm can really get started. It gets better, though!
How to Plant and Tend to Crops
As I mentioned before, you mainly get your first few seeds from harvesting wild crops. Alternatively, though, you can also check the Seeds category of the Farmer’s Workbench.
You can find all of the various Seeds in the game in that one spot, allowing you to sort of purchase them by spending Essences of Life. More Seeds unlock as you upgrade your Farmer’s Workbench, as well.
Once you have some seeds, use your Crude Hoe to till the soil. You just need to equip it and right-click on any block of dirt or grass for this!
Then, equip the seed you wish to play and click on the tiled soil. You’ll plant it and the crop will start to grow automatically. You don’t really need to do much from this point forward!
However, you can speed up how fast crops grow. To do that, use your Watering Can to collect water from any body of water and then pour it on the tiled soil. You’ll notice that it gets darker when you do so, confirming its moisturized.
While watering your crops is not mandatory by any means, it’s highly encouraged. It boosts the growth speed by x2.5 as of this writing.
If you wish, you can also speed up the growth of crops by using a Fertilizer Bag, which you can craft from the Farmer’s Workbench. It boosts growth speed by x2.
For maximum speed, use both the Watering Can and Fertilizer Bag on your crops to grow them way faster!
At this point, you just need to wait for the crops to grow, then come back to harvest them. You’ll get the crops as well as some Essence of Life, although you won’t get seeds back from them.
How do Saplings Work
Another thing you can do at the Farmer’s Workbench is get saplings by trading in Essences of Life. These saplings allow you to grow the various tree types available in the game.
Conveniently, saplings don’t require any effort. You don’t need to tile the soil or anything like that! Just find a good, empty spot on dirt or grass to plant them. Remember, equip them and right-click to plant.
Adding Animals to the Farm
Aside from the crops and saplings, you might also want to add animals to your farm. After all, there are cows and sheep out in the wild! Those would be great on your farm.
However, sadly, animals are very limited as of this writing. In the Early Access launch version, there is no way to tame animals. They also cannot breed at all and they don’t age, so critters remain critters at all times.
To make matters worse, the only way to get animals in your farm right now is to build a fenced area and try to force the animals to run into it. Even using the Feed Bag item does not help, as it seems to have absolutely no effect at luring them.
So, sadly, animals are a very limited and unfinished feature currently. The best you can do is use the Capture Crate to catch animals, but that only works for smaller animals.
That said, you can still get some useful resources from animals found in the wild. Interact with cows to get Milk and use your Shears on sheep to get Wool Scraps. You can also build a Chicken Coop, which nearby chickens will use to lay Eggs that you can collect.
Additionally, animals sometimes drop Poop. Gross as it may be, you can collect the Poop to make the Fertilizer Bag for your crops. So, don’t leave it lying around!
With that, though, you should now know all of the basics of farming in Hytale. There are other things you can find at your Farmer’s Workbench, such as cosmetic blocks. But that aside, you now have all the tools to start your very own farm.
