Iran just hit the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia with drones, and Trump’s only response was “you’ll find out soon”

The US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was struck by two drones on Tuesday, starting a small fire at the compound. At the same time, a drone also hit a fuel tank at Oman’s Duqm commercial port. President Trump, when asked about the US response to this attack and the recent killing of American service members, said it would be made clear “soon.”

These attacks are part of Iran’s ongoing retaliation across the Gulf region, following a series of US and Israeli strikes on Iran that began the previous Saturday. The Saudi Ministry of Defence confirmed the embassy strike caused minor material damage, and later reports suggested more drones were targeting the site.

According to Al Jazeera, the building was empty at the time, and no casualties were reported. Witnesses heard a loud blast and saw black smoke rising over Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, where many foreign missions are based. Saudi military sources said air defenses intercepted four drones targeting the area. In Oman, the state-run news agency confirmed limited material damage at Duqm port and no casualties there either.

The US is pulling non-emergency staff from multiple Middle Eastern countries as the situation grows more serious

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also claimed to have targeted a US airbase in Bahrain, saying its naval forces launched a large-scale drone and missile attack at dawn on the US air base in the Sheikh Isa area. The IRGC said twenty drones and three missiles were used, claiming the base’s main command headquarters was destroyed, though no immediate evidence was provided. 

Senator Lindsey Graham has been vocal about these developments, though he openly admitted the US has zero plan for what comes next. In response, the US Department of State ordered all non-emergency personnel to leave Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and Iraq.

A day earlier, the US assistant secretary of state for consular affairs posted on social media, urging Americans in a dozen Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel, to “DEPART NOW” using any available commercial transport.

The US Embassy in Kuwait closed indefinitely due to “regional tensions.” For Americans still in Israel, the US Embassy in Jerusalem said it could not evacuate or directly assist those trying to leave. Some lawmakers have raised alarms about where this is all heading, with Senator Chris Murphy warning that the worst is still yet to come.

Earlier on Tuesday, the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a “shelter in place” notice to its citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran, advising them to shelter immediately and avoid the embassy until further notice because of the attack on the facility.
