Iran has issued a stark warning to European nations as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. Tehran says any European Union country that joins the United States and Israel in military action against Iran would immediately become a target for retaliation.
The warning came from Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi during an interview highlighted by Reuters. His remarks mark one of the clearest threats yet directed at European countries as the conflict risks widening beyond the region.
Takht-Ravanchi said any nation that participates alongside the U.S. and Israel in attacks on Iran would be treated as part of the aggression and therefore subject to retaliation. The statement signals that Tehran views outside military involvement as a red line.
Iran draws a red line for European involvement
In the interview, Takht-Ravanchi warned that countries joining military operations against Iran would be considered legitimate targets. He said, “Any country that joins in the aggression against Iran, joins America and Israel in the aggression against Iran, definitely, they will be also legitimate targets for Iran retaliation,” as a Russia question at the White House also surfaced in Washington.
The comments arrive as several European countries have increased their military presence in the region. France, Greece, and Italy have sent naval vessels toward the Middle East, a move that has drawn attention amid the escalating conflict.
Despite the military deployments, European Union officials have largely emphasized diplomacy. Many leaders have condemned Iranian strikes in the region while also calling for negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
The situation places Europe in a complicated position. Governments must balance security concerns and alliances with the United States and Israel while avoiding actions that could be interpreted by Tehran as direct participation in military operations.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin is working with international partners to find a path toward ending the fighting. He added that Germany shares the broader aims of the United States and Israel, amid oil price surge talks elsewhere in Washington.
For now, European leaders continue to call for de-escalation while maintaining a military presence in nearby waters, even as Iran warns that deeper involvement could trigger direct retaliation.
