Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano just sat down with PC Gamer to discuss all things Slay the Spire 2, from the developer’s thoughts on its success, to what its plans are for the game during early access, which includes a new “character, or characters” as Yano teased, as well as some fresh new modes.
“I do wanna try a few things, but they kinda have to pass our experimental phase? And I’m not sure if all that will be public, but we’ll see,” stated Yano. “I imagine the first few characters we launched with to be simpler. I think the Regent is a simple character. It’s a character with two resources, that’s like the core concept. The other character, Necrobinder, is supposed to be slightly more complicated. But who knows what the other character, or characters, will be when we launch them?”
As far as I’m aware, apart from a few teases within the game itself, Yano’s last comment there is the first official confirmation that Slay the Spire 2’s roster will expand beyond the five current playable characters that are available in early access. However, that’s not all that’s on the way, as he also revealed that three new modes are coming to the game in the near future.
“There are three specific things that I have in mind, which I’ll try to explain in a vague way to not give away too much,” Yano continued. “The first one is a mode that is meant for people who want to play in a very competitive fashion. The second is for people who want to have the Slay the Spire experience, but do not have the time to do so. And the third is ‘What if there were other ways to interact with people, socially or in a multiplayer-like setting, with the current systems that exist today?’”
As someone who has played way too much Slay the Spire, I feel like the first two modes Yano teases there sound pretty straightforward. The first one sounds like a hard mode, perhaps with some extra modifiers, and the second one sounds like a speedrun mode.
The last one, however, is completely eluding me. A social-focused version of Slay the Spire? A versus mode, maybe? Or, more like VR Chat meets Slay the Spire or something? In any case, I trust Mega Crit’s cooking, so I look forward to trying out whatever this mysterious third mode ends up being.
