Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s first teaser came out this morning, and even if we don’t see much of the film itself, it does lay bare just how many characters this movie is going to have. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow are all returning, and some version of Jim Carrey’s Doctor Eggman is going to be there, too. Newcomers like Kristen Bell’s Amy Rose and Metal Sonic are making proper debuts after showing up in Sonic 3’s post-credits scene. But the teaser and the Sonic movie social media accounts may be hinting that another Sonic character will also show up in the film, and I worry about it getting overcrowded.

The teaser makes reference to “chaos,” which at first blush might seem like a nod to the Chaos Emeralds, as the energized gems are literally on the screen as it’s being said. However, fans are looking at posts by the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account and theorize they might also be a reference to Sonic Adventure villain Chaos, who hasn’t appeared in the live-action films yet.
Chaos is an aquatic creature that mutates over the course of Sonic Adventure, eventually becoming a massive, dragon-like entity that nearly destroys the world. Its transformations come from using the energy of the Chaos Emeralds, so the teaser focusing on the gems could be a nod to him on its own. Coupled with the Sonic account’s social media posts, one of which includes a whirlpool emoji, it seems entirely possible Chaos could be making his big screen debut in Sonic 4.

All that said, something I’ve appreciated about the Sonic movies is that they’ve been pretty restrained in how many game characters they add in each movie. The first film is straight up just the Sonic show, the second movie rounds out the blue blur’s team with Tails and Knuckles, then the third movie, which had a wide open window to introduce several heroes, chose to focus solely on Keanu Reeves’ Shadow. Paramount very clearly wants these movies to reach an MCU-level crossover event down the line, but we already know Sonic 4 will focus on Amy and Metal Sonic, which is more than enough to sustain a movie.
Chaos is the kind of Thanos-level threat that Sonic and friends could have to team up to take down in a standalone movie, which would be a much better use of him than lumping him into whatever’s going on with Metal Sonic. So the idea that Chaos could be a surprise third villain in the movie alongside Metal and Eggman gives me pause. This is all speculation, but four movies in, it’s perfectly reasonable to fear Paramount may lose sight of what made these movies successful and think that more video game references and bigger casts is the way to get people’s butts in theater seats. Restraint has worked in the Sonic movies’ favor thus far, and while I’m down to see Chaos show up down the line, he deserves his own movie, and I don’t think Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has room for that.
We’ll know for sure when the film comes to theaters on March 19, 2027.
