Trump announced he obliterated Iran’s crown jewel island Friday night, then a missile breached Baghdad’s most fortified zone and hit the US Embassy

A missile struck the US Embassy in Baghdad, hitting a helipad on the compound. This attack came just hours after President Trump announced that US airstrikes had “totally obliterated” military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island.
According to the NY Post, the projectile breached Baghdad’s heavily fortified “Green Zone,” an area that houses Iraqi government buildings and foreign embassies. Security officials confirmed the hit on one of the largest American diplomatic facilities.
Video posted on social media by a pro-Iranian militia outlet in Iraq showed smoke rising from the mission, with additional reports noting fire erupting from the building. This strike happened shortly after reports indicated two fighters belonging to an Iran-backed militant group were killed in Baghdad. It is still unclear if anyone was injured in the embassy attack.
The US Embassy had already warned Americans of serious threats in Iraq hours before the attack
The US Embassy had posted a security alert just hours before the strike, warning that “Iran and the terrorist militia groups allied with it pose a significant threat to public safety in Iraq.” The alert detailed that “attacks targeting US citizens, US interests, and critical infrastructure have been observed,” and that these groups have also targeted US companies and energy infrastructure.
The embassy warned of attacks on hotels frequented by foreigners and other US-linked facilities throughout Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, and highlighted a risk of kidnapping for US citizens. It advised Americans to “exercise vigilance, maintain a low profile, and avoid areas that could make them potential targets,” and also provided guidance for those wishing to leave Iraq.
Trump has been vocal on several fronts lately, and Melania’s recent address calling Donald the commander-in-chief drew widespread attention as well. Since the US launched Operation Epic Fury two weeks ago, Iran has responded with a series of retaliatory missile and drone strikes against American military bases, embassies, and neighboring Gulf nations.
Just last week, the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia’s capital city of Riyadh was damaged in a suspected Iranian drone strike, which sparked a fire but did not cause severe damage. Before the Baghdad attack, President Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States Central Command had executed “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East.”
He claimed these strikes “totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.” Kharg Island is Iran’s crucial oil export hub in the Persian Gulf. The Trump administration has also been making waves domestically, with its unprecedented move against Anthropic sending shockwaves through Silicon Valley.
Trump emphasized that, despite the power of US weapons, he had chosen “NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island” for “reasons of decency.” However, he issued a warning: “should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”
