Enemy’s enemy is my friend.

President Trump announced that he would back Kurdish groups if they launched an offensive inside Iran, signaling a significant shift in regional dynamics, as reported by The Hill. This comes as the militias have reportedly been in touch with the administration about a potential incursion into western Iran.

The president expressed strong support for the idea during an interview. He stated, “I think it’s wonderful that they want to do that, I’d be all for it.” When pressed on whether Washington would provide or had proposed air support for a potential Kurdish offensive against the Iranian regime, Trump remained tight-lipped. He simply told the interviewer, “I can’t tell you that.” The president clarified that the goal for the Kurds in such an action would be to “win,” adding, “If they’re going to do that, that’s good.”

Iranian Kurdish groups, based in the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan near the border with Iran, have been actively preparing for a potential attack inside Iran. Their objective is to further degrade the Iranian military, aligning with ongoing efforts by both the U.S. and Israeli militaries, which have been hitting Iran with missiles and bombs as part of a joint military operation.

Reports have also emerged this week about the CIA’s involvement in a secretive push to destabilize the Islamic Republic

The agency has reportedly been supplying small arms to Iranian Kurdish militias, which certainly adds another layer to the already complex situation. It’s a clear indication that multiple strategies are in play to exert pressure on Iran.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump has been in communication with Kurdish leaders. She told reporters that Trump “spoke with Kurdish leaders with respect to our base that we have in northern Iraq.” This suggests that discussions about potential operations and strategic alignments are actively underway, laying the groundwork for future actions.

Adding to the readiness, Kurdish Iranian opposition leader Omar Baleki spoke about the groups’ preparedness. When asked if they are getting ready for a ground assault inside Iran, Baleki confidently stated that the group is “ready for anything.”

Overall, while President Trump has given a clear verbal endorsement for a Kurdish offensive, the specifics of U.S. military support, particularly air cover, remain shrouded in secrecy.
