Xbox Just Announced The Next Xbox, Confirms It Will Play PC Games – WGB

Look, usually big announcements these days are teased beforehand and then saved for big events. But not Xbox! Nah, they just tossed their new CEO onto X and let her announce the next console in a tweet.

Shiny new Xbox head honcho Asha Sharma revealed that the next-gen Xbox is currently going by the codename Project Helix. That’s one way to keep of your new reign as the queen of Xbox, I suppose.

“Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console,” said Asha, having apparently decided to just break the Internet during her first week on the job.

She then proceeded to confirm what all the rumours, leaks and insider reports have been saying: the next Xbox is basically a console/PC hybrid that will be capable of playing Xbox and PC games.

“Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”

No further details were shared. We don’t know exactly how it will play PC games – will it fully support Steam, as reported? If so, you’ll be able to play PlayStation games on your Xbox! Although this might be why Sony is reportedly backing away from releasing their singleplayer titles on PC.

We do know that Xbox will chatting with its partners at GDC next week. I’m sure at least some information will appear from the event.

Now, in fairness, Xbox have actually been fairly open about the next-gen machine, so technically it has been confirmed to exist for a long time now. But this feels a little different. Like, it’s not a big on-stage blowout with all the details, but it’s still more than just the casual confirmations that some kind of Xbox exists that we’ve had previously.

As for Asha Sharma, maybe this is a way for her to ingratiate herself with the Xbox fans. Or maybe Xbox figured that the console was such an open secret anyway that it might generate some buzz if they start putting it out there a little more.

And in case you somehow missed it, Sharma is here because Phil Spencer retired and Sarah Bond decided to quit, all at the same time.
