Ashes of Creation finally launched into Early Access on Steam, so it’s time for some best tips and tricks for beginners.
This game, like most other MMORPGs, can be pretty daunting at first. Especially when learning to deal with some of its quirks, such as its inventory management system, or figuring out how to level optimally early.
In this guide, we’ll give you a variety of tips to help make the early game smoother for you.

Character Creation Tips
As soon as you start the game, you will of course need to create a character. There are 8 class archetypes that you can pick from, each one fitting a different role and power fantasy.
There’s the supportive Bard that empowers allies, the stealthy Rogue that does high burst damage, and the Tank that… well, tanks! That’s just to name a few, of course.
If you want to get to know all of these classes more in-depth, check out our guide on the best class to play. It gives you a quick rundown of each one, allowing you to decide which one fits you best.
That aside, you’ll also need to pick your Starting Region. We’ve gone over this in more detail in our starting area guide. But, to summarize, we highly recommend starting in The Riverlands (Divine Gate of Aela).
This starting area is more polished and has a better quest flow overall. As such, it’s a smoother experience and is also the best way to learn the game as a new player.
Do the Quests
As soon as you start the game, you’ll be able to do some early game quests. This works a bit differently depending on your starting region, but it’s mostly the same for both regions currently.
Basically, look for NPCs that have the diamond-shaped icons above their head. Talk with them to start and progress quests.
The early quests are a fantastic source of XP, while also getting you some important things, such as your starting equipment. You’ll even get a mount later on in the main questline, which is important as the game features no fast travel!
Also, while you’re at it, make sure to get as many Rations as you can from the early mobs, such as Goblins. Rations are a pretty solid healing item, and getting a good amount from mobs early will make things smoother for you.
Complete Destinies
Going hand in hand with the quests, you can also complete Destinies as you play the game. To check them out, you just need to press the L key.
The Destinies serve two functions. One is that they act as a sort of tutorial, telling you how to perform basic actions and asking you to do them.
The second function is that you get to claim and collect various goodies by completing the tasks. These mainly include some bonus XP, but there are also reward chests that give you some equipment!
So, we highly recommend keeping track of Destinies. They’ll teach you how to play the game and reward you at the same time.
Check out Commissions
Tied to the previous two, we also recommend checking the Commission bulletin boards in every town. These allow you to, as you must’ve guessed, take on Commissions.
These are essentially very basic quests. Most of them just require you to gather resources or hunt down some mobs, nothing too crazy.
However, they can be decently rewarding as they give you a decent amount of XP and some Glint.
If you don’t know yet, Glint is an important currency in this game. It can be traded for gold, used to purchase commodities, and even pay the housing taxes later on in the game.
Do note, though, you’ll drop your held Glint on death! Make sure to store it at settlement warehouses or sell it to vendors to make some gold.
Anyway, we recommend not ignoring Commissions. The earlier you start doing these, the better.
Get That Bag
Something that might trip new players early on is the inventory management system. It involves a grid-based system with limited slots and stacks, not dissimilar to something like Resident Evil 4.
What’s more, your items are split into different bags, with some of them being specialized. For example, a Mining Satchel is only for resources obtained from mining and nothing else.
To help alleviate the limited inventory, we highly recommend purchasing any bags you can. They are sold by equipment vendors and profession NPCs. Get them as soon as possible for a smoother experience.
Grouping Is Recommended
Early on in the game, you can easily play solo up until around Level 10 or so. It’s pretty doable without others as long as you follow our tips before, such as focusing on quests and doing Destinies.
However, after Level 10, the leveling pace starts to slow down. So, it’s highly recommended to start seeking parties and guilds to play with others.
This is, of course, even more important if you’re playing a group-oriented class such as Cleric, Tank, or Bard. But, ultimately, the game is designed so that playing with others is encouraged, making progression faster.
Potential Quick FPS Fix
Now, last but not least, we want to leave you with a potential fix to performance issues you might encounter.
More specifically, you might notice that your FPS starts dropping the longer you play. So, this mainly affects players who are prone to playing in long single sessions.
If you do notice this performance drop, you simply need to relog. Quit back to the character selection screen and just log back in! This should clear up the issue, fixing the FPS drops.
Alternatively, you can try closing and relaunching the game. This should work too, but it’s just going to take a bit longer to load back in.
